Bridges are usually assumed to be across rivers, although this is not always the case. Bridges may be up, in case they count as blocked, or down in which case they do not impede movement at all. Changing a bridge's state from up to down or vice versa carries a (usually) modest token cost, depending on the particular ruleset in use.

In [World War II Crescent]?, the meanings of up and down are reversed, and once down a bridge is permanently blocked (destroyed) for the rest of the game.
