Bag of Animals

During their time as watchmen in Waltdorf Pez and Smith were once called in to solve a mysterious death in an inn near the riverbank. The victim had been a guest there and was found mauled to death as if by a wild animal in his room, a room that had been locked on the inside. Dismissing the claims by some staff there that 'strange monkey-like creatures' were to blame Smith and Pez began finding suspects. It soon transpired that the inn offered other services, other than just a room for the night, and that the guest had been there for such a liaison. After threatening to send Smith as the Watch's representative at the wake the wife confessed that she had been told about her husband's activities and had hired someone to murder her husband for her. She was arrested, but they still had to locate the actual killer.

During some late night drinking sessions with the older watchmen Smith was able to discover that this was not the first mysterious death at this inn, so their investigation focussed on the old innkeeper who had been running the place for years. While scanning the building for the use of any magics in the deaths Peregrine came across a nondescript bag which glowed in his sensitive vision. Recognising it as his own kind of conjuring magic he was able to pull from it a furry ball which upon being removed from the bag grew into a fully grown bull. He re-examined the room, discovering a small hole in the skirting board between it and the next room. Not big enough for a wild animal, but big enough for a furball from the bag.

Under interrogation Smith and Pez discovered the innkeeper had an unusual solution to clients with a poor record for paying up. He would first try blackmail, and if that failed he would let the spouse know and take the fee for mudering him, by unleashing two or three wild animals into the room. He was arrested, Smith was given drinks by all the old watchmen who were happy to see their old cases solved, and Pez was gifted with the bag.
