Cuan McFionn was born in Port Merion a small coastal village in Llleyn. Despite the Lleynians brutal reputation, Cuan’s life there was on the whole relatively peaceful. This would not last. Shortly after his fifth summer the village was raided by Demetian marauders. During the ensuing chaos he was taken and subsequently sold into slavery.

Over the following years many men owned him. Some even showed him kindness, but they were few. Most of them abused him in one way or another and by his thirteenth summer he knew almost every indignity known. This did not stop him from dreaming, he dreamt of being a free man, a mighty warrior, a leader of men, anything really, just as long as he escaped his present life.

Sometimes he felt he dreamt perhaps a little too much. When he woke the household up screaming of a giant bearded figure pressing its face against his window (of which when the guards investigated they reported no sign) he received a beating. After that, when a crowd winged humanoid figures sat on every bough of a tree called out to him & talked to him, or when he saw the ghost of a flea, he kept quiet. He thought no one had noticed him acting strangely, however he was wrong. The local druid scared Cuan, the other slaves said he could do things if you stared at his eyes, so he avoided looking in his direction. He had noticed that the druid’s cat had taken to following him, but this was just another detail he attributed to his growing dementia.

It was because he avoided looking at him directly that he didn’t notice the local druid and a friend he was dining with blocking his way until they were directly in front of him. Besides his mind was preoccupied with a fresh humiliation from his current master Diamid. At first he thought he was in for more trouble, but after introducing themselves as Fergal & Myrddin they instead started asking him strange questions, questions about the things he had recently seen. They both agreed that Cuan had a gift, and that they needed to develop it.

Though Cuan was confused by both what had happened and why, he was thrilled when Myrddin approached his master and offered him a sum of money and goods for Cuan, Diarmid seemed intimidated by the druid and accepted the first offer. Soon he belonged to Myrddin.

Myrddin then happily informed Cuan that not only was he free, but he was to become a druid. At first this life didn’t seem all that different to his life as a slave, he was treated better, but he still had to do many similar tasks, and on top of these he had lessons on the likes of language and history. And his life was still not settled, in much the same way as he’d been sold and resold, he moved between the three druids Myrddin, Blaise & Morgan, especially when Myrddin travelled somewhere he deemed to dangerous for Cuan.

Eventually they began teaching him some of the basics of the druidic arts, and on the day that Callwch the raven-spirit attached itself to Cuan, Myrddin announced him both ready to perform magic of his own and accompany him on his travels.

Despite all that he has learnt from his elders, he knows there is much that they have not yet told him, and Cuan wants to know it all. On several occasions he has put his life in peril in pursuit of such knowledge. Because of this disturbing trait his teachers have been trying to drill into him the importance of his duty to the people of Britain. It appears that this has sunk in as he was last seen leaving his companions to repair the damage done to a stone circle, which had released all manner of creatures from the Otherworld.
