Dating conventions

In both Free Citizens of Antarctica and Descendants of Grundy Geoff has had to refer to events in the past as happening 'xxx years ago'. I'd like to come up with a dating system that we can agree on for referring to. There are two systems I think we can use...
- Just say the Fourth World dating system has by some fluke started 2008 years ago. So all dates can be related back to some closely equivalent Earth date.
- Establish some date that we can all agree on. I'd suggest that some significant city was founded 2761 years ago and that the dates are taken from that. So the Fourth World is in the year 2761 AF (After Founding). Which 'coincidentally' is the same year as Earth would be on if we still used the Roman AU dating system.
That's not to say others still use other dating systems (like Hebrew and Muslim calendars on Earth), but that this is the one most commonly used around the world.--Alex 18:22, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
Having a time line roughly comparable to our own in terms of 'recent' (Last millenium.) technology would be useful.
I'd like it best if we go for something like the second idea, although I'm not sure if the founding of a city would be a good choice - I'd prefer something a bit more universal to the world, because I don't think anyone city would have that much influence anymore. We've still not really decided why this place is called the fourth world. It might be nice if the calender relates back to that, assuming its over an appropriate time scale.
