Firkin Greenberry

The problem with tracking down the origin of Firkin Greenberry is that he is a kender, an Ansalon kinder at that, and as such is prone to wild and crazy exaggeration. He was either born in Kendermore, in Palanthus or at the north pole. His parents were either farmers, traders or the penguin royal family. As a child he either saved the village from orcs, escaped from a city under siege or was lost and then found discussing theology with the priests of Paladine.

During his life he may have visited Solais, flown on the back of a griffon, visited a magical empire inside a hollow planet, spied on the master wizards of three worlds as they entertained each other and discussed magic, seen a comet land on a hydra about to eat him, been carried by a giant ape up the side of a tower of high sorcery, ridden an elephant through a crowded market place and saved a land of talking animals from an evil witch. He tells stories of his adventures during a war between two planets, his escapades as a pilot for a flying castle set upon a cloud, his time as an accountant for a multi-dimensional theatre group, the month he spent raising a panda cub until its mother returned, that embarrassing period when he was mistakenly identified as the god of war by a tribe of raccoon-people and the night he became a vampire (luckily only temporarily). He claims to have had a stint in several armies, travelled under the oceans, been polymorphed into a bear, fought a dragon single-handed (or been the key witness at the dragon’s trial depending upon how he tells the story), been made an elf-friend, partied with nymphs and satyrs for a single night that lasted a month in the outside world, seen the creation of the planet and its eventual fiery destruction, danced with werewolves and saved all life on Krynn (twice).

Some of this is true.

What is definitely known is that he was transported to Ravenloft at the same time as the Heroes of the Vale when they were brought there in search of the Phoenix. He joined them in their quest to rid the demiplane of some of its most evil inhabitants. When they returned to Taladas he returned with them and has spent the following decade travelling, helping his friends and making new ones. He has worked as an investigator for the Airriders, as a salesman for Nathan K’Barl’s weapons business and as a barman at the Whistling Fish for a whole twenty minutes.

Like many kender his personality is an innocent cheerfulness which can be either charming or insanely irritating. He is friendly to all he meets and he means very few people any harm. Sadly though he retains the kender’s most annoying trait; an inability to understand the concept of property. It is this tendency to pick up any object left behind, merely put down for a second or hidden in the owner’s pockets that led to his rather sudden exit from the Whistling Fish (along with an eagle’s feather, three rings, two lockets, seven dice and Halvar’s Cube of Force). The latter was later returned by Noman when he found the kender playing with it. He also possesses another typical kender trait, an absolute inability to feel fear. Considering what dangers he finds himself placed in it seems there must be some god watching over him, for there is no other reason he could still be alive…
