Lowell, Patrick
From RPGwiki
Patrick Percival Moore Lowell was born in the Burroughs Crater Complex, a small outpost of a hundred souls to the west of Isidis Planitia and north of the Hellas Sea. Burroughs Crater is a fairly remote outpost, a scientific commune engaged in biological research, whose primary concern is the improvement of Martian agriculture. As a result of its small size, out of the way location and the fact its head was a distant cousin of the Holzerhein dynasty it is largely left to its own devices. These factors, along with its close proximity to various independent fishing and farming communities and the high level of education, makes it slightly less restrictive than the more commercial arcologies around Coprates and Pavonis.
Patrick Lowell was the child of two genetic botanists, but it was his uncle, Gilbert Lowell, whom he most took to as a child. The chief doctor for both the Burroughs pyramid and the local farming and fishing communities nearby he was a rugged individual, willing to brave dust storms and howling winds if he was needed. He also helped the local security force with their inquiries bringing his autopsy skills and a keen eye to their investigations. It was he who taught Patrick to be empirical and demand proof for anything he believed and to be able to look after himself in the harsher parts of Mars. He also filled his nephew’s head with such un-Martian thoughts as caring for those less fortunate and seeing the good in other people, but then doctors often tend to be the last iconoclasts. When Patrick came to choose his path he opted to follow in his uncle’s footsteps.
With his family connections (he was very, very distantly related to the Holzerhein head of Burroughs) he was able to secure a place in a university in Coprates studying forensic medicine. There he found himself sharing a room with Jonathon Wells, a history student with whom he formed a close friendship. After Wells graduated, Lowell spent a year working and training with the local security force as a coroner and investigator, before returning to finish his degree. Graduating somewhere just above halfway in his class Lowell was trying to decide between returning to Burroughs Crater or spending some time in Coprates Security, when Wells approached him with the prospect of an entry level position in Internal Affairs. Seeing a possibility for advancement, and a chance to put his skills to good use helping people, Lowell took the job.
Growing up on the fringes of Martian society, in a small community headed by the ‘white sheep’ of the Holzerhein dynasty, has given Lowell a rather rose-tinted view of Martian society. There was little to no crime in Burroughs itself and most of what there was in surrounding communities was poverty related, rather than politically motivated. As a result Lowell is largely unaware of the problems with Martian society and thinks RAM is a force for good in the Solar System. His experiences in Coprates Security educated him a little in the ways of his world, but he is certain to find working with Internal Affairs more than he bargained for. One can only hope he survives the experience.
