Police Action

The following day the members of NLEF 5 arrived at the Glass House, the home of the New Lazlo militia. They were met by Giordino, who introduced them to Arnold Prufrock, one of the military’s bureaucrats. Sadly this had the same effect meeting bureaucrats always has; it left them dealing with a mountain of paperwork. After they had finished the form-filling though they were invited to select extra equipment and choose support staff that would help them in their coming missions. With that done, Prufrock left and the team discussed their plans with Giordino. They decided to accompany NLEF 4 on their planned expedition to Mexico. NLEF 4 was following a tale that said a bandit king had led an army carrying a hundred magic blades over the Rio Grande, and that was the kind of power that could swing a battle.

While Sir Dominic was getting his cyber-armour repaired and Stargazer and Campbell were practising at the firing range, Felixston and Jones joined some of the other NLEF team leaders and psychics for the interrogation of one of the mystic knights. This was achieved with the aid of a psychic reader, D’Kel, who was able, with Felixston’s help, to pinpoint a safe house. He also discovered the presence of Scarsdale, a wizard who acted as middleman between the mystic knights and their paymaster.

The entire NLEF team was assembled and went into action against the safe house. After the crazy Sabian cut the communication lines to the house, Campbell and the D-Bee Ferkin Greenberry sabotaged the vehicles. Then the strike team moved in. The mysterious alien mage known as Prospero magically opened the gates into the grounds, and he and some of the big guns moved into covering fire positions. Meanwhile Captain Lister, Sir Dominic, Captain Giordino and Sophie White moved in on the house. Lister was able to blow the doors in with a well aimed bolt of plasma which alerted those inside to their presence. Unfortunately their chosen method of defence was to fill the grounds of the house with close to fifty zombies.

A huge firefight erupted, with the various NLEF members attacking the zombie horde while Lister and Sir Dominic entered the building and took into custody Scarsdale and his servant, Igor. Meanwhile Sophie White and several of the real heavyweights combated the ogre zombies, with the less combat oriented members cutting through the more-human sized opponents. Campbell and Greenberry took down three zombies between them, though Campbell came out of it with barely a scrap of armour on his body. Felixston miscalculated at the start by unleashing a telepathic attack at the mindless zombies, whose only victim was her comrade Tamburlaine. She redeemed herself by shooting, stabbing, and pyrokinetically incinerating one of the zombies, before telekinetically pummelling one of the larger zombies to pieces.

Stargazer also started badly, attempting to shoot rapidly at the expense of his aim. Once he changed from his pistols to his rifle and changed his position he had more success and was able to kill his share of the undead. Once Sir Dominic emerged from the house he also proved himself, taking on one of the largest zombies single-handed and besting it, a feat only matched by Prospero and Sophie.

In the midst of the carnage though, Scarsdale was attacked by one of the zombies, no longer under his control after he was knocked unconscious by Captain Lister. With his brain partially eaten it was unlikely even D’Kel could read much from it. The NLEF team’s best hope of discovering who was behind the mystic knight’s attack, and who could be the traitor, now lay in the papers. When the scholar Alan Morse looked at them he spotted the name of Ravensburg, a town in the Ohio Valley. According to him the town is known as a supporter of the Federation of Magic, and it is likely the Federation knows about the NLEF project.

The chances of them looking favourably on it are slim.
