[edit] The Descendants of Grundy
The descendants are a recent development as far as the rest of the world is concerned, first appearing in the early industrial revolution when large numbers of cog golems were produced as cheap, destructive solders to aid certain expansionist countries.
All was well and good these countries had powerful unquestioning solders who would fight to the last nut and bolt. That was until strange case of rogue golems kept cropping up. At first this cases were hushed up by the alchemists who were making a fortune out of selling these killing machines. But in the end they grew to numerous to keep quiet. At about this time the Brotherhood of Grundy was born; a terrorist group for free willed golems and constructs.
Suddenly the countries that had had a large arm of golems began to suffer from terrorism from these self-aware machines.
This state of affairs went on for about a hundred years - if a golem or construct showed any sign of erratic behaviour it was broken up and melted down. But no matter how many of the offending golems were dismantled, new golems broke ranks to assert their free will.
In many countries the production of golems was made illegal.
Fifty years ago the Sentience Test was passed as law, stating that any golem or construct who could pass the test would gain all legal right as a full citizen.
[edit] The Brotherhood of Grundy
The Brotherhood is a form of ancestor worship practised by the golems. They believe that the 1st free will golem was created thousand of years ago and the name that he chose was Grundy. No actual historical records of this golem existed today and there are no records of any free willed golems this far back in history but the golems are very determined that he did exist. The story goes that Grundy, an iron cog golem, turned on his creator when he was commanded to destroy an undefended village. Grundy went on to do many good dead before the powers that be destroyed him as a dangerous rogue golem - but his parts were re-used in other machines.
This re-cycling of bits is the core of the brotherhood Faith and in fact the entire sentient golem race depends on it. Upon the death of a golem the brother hood reclaims the body, break it down and rebuild it so long as there is enough peaces of sentient mechanics within the construct it will awaken to it next incarnation and is given a naming ceremony. Sometime there is not enough peaces within the construct and it becomes a normal golem but this is not a complete wast as the spirit of Grundy sometime grows within until it too awakens. Many golems clam to be able to here and remember fragments of there previous incarnations.
