The Ring of Hideous Misfortune
From RPGwiki
This ancient item is of uncertain origin, but its powers are as great as they are terrible. Given that the ring brings its owners nothing but pain, misery and death, it can only be sumised that either:
- It was incorrectly forged and was intended to do something else.
- It was intended as a trap for some poor bastard. Or...
- Whoever created it was a complete psychopath.
It recent history is much better known. It was possessed for a long time by a Yuan-Ti of great power known as The Abomination. It was kept secure in its vaults in the city of Bok. Quiet how The Abomination came to own the ring is unclear.
When the League of Minotaurs made moves to invade Hosk, it was clear to Schallat that there wasn't much chance of a defeating the invaders in a straight fight. Instead he and a group of other Bakali trevelled to Bok and stole the ring before meeting up with Krag Ironbeard III. The minotaur paladin then tricked Cronus Maximus III into wearing it.
| "A most unpaladin like act, if I ever saw one, but most usefull. I always knew there was a reason I kept healing him after a fight rather than finishing him off." |

The armies of the League marked into Hosk anyway, and even with the minoataurs suffering from the effects of the ring the military forces of the freelands where are too puny to defeat them. However, Maximuses victory was short lived. The loses suffered during the invasion, along with the chaos created back home ment that the minotaur armies were recalled rather than being left to occupy Hosk.
Maximus died not long after doning the ring. Its current location is unknown to the heroes of the vale.
| "Yes, one of my proudest moments that. I've never been able to create so much chaos before or since, but rest assured that I have a plan to top even that feat. It doesn't do to rest upon past achievments, after all." |
