The Trident

Oddly, "The Trident" has never gone by any name other than that rather understated description. This is most unusual, as intelligent weapons tend to have a reputation for self aggrandisement. The trident, though, doesn't boast often. In fact, the trident's plain appearance and title can start to look like a mask on occasion.

Certainly, very little is known about its past before Schallat found it at the bottom of Deepmountain after slaying a demon called Angomais. It can only be supposed that its unknown creators didn't think much of it, seeing as they didn't even give it a proper name! It wasn't a very powerful item, and had a tendency to slip into torpor after exercising what powers it did have. Perhaps this unknown creator considered it a failure and cast it aside to work on other projects? That would go a long way to explaining the trident's lack of ego.

Several years ago, the trident was empowered, seemingly by Chislev himself as a reward - although whether he was giving his boon to Schallat or the Trident itself is unclear. In any event, the trident became more dangerous, and stopped slipping into torpor.

The touch of Chislev seemed also to bestow the potential for madness as well. When Schallat became captured by a hold of dwarves the Trident went berserk, slaughtering every one of them that was unable to flee from it! After this terrible event the trident started to become increasingly erratic, showing an irrational hatred of dwarves, and Schallat struggled to control its blood thirsty drives and impulses.

Evil, it seems, looks beyond simple physical form, because eventually the trident was swallowed up by the mists of Ravenloft, taking Schallat, his friends, and the entire vale of the mage with it! In that unpleasant realm, Schallat encountered a version of himself called Lord Dyhe the Crucifier. Eventually it seems that the Trident itself broke the curse that had fallen over it, and everything was return to Taladas. Since then the Trident seems to have calmed down and become its old good natured - if unpredictable - self.

"I'm glad the Trident appears to be improving. I was beginning to wonder if the thing had been blessed by Chislev or some darker power..."

"Dwarves..."
Schallat
"What about them?"
The Trident
"Nothing, just checking."
