Which races
From RPGwiki
It was vaguely decided that we would avoid using the standard races. How far are we going to take that? No Elves, Dwarves, Halfling, or Gnomes - ergo the standard PC races? No Orcs or Kobolds - no common npc races? No dragons - I'd definitely say amen to that! The big scaly ones are so over used that even mentioning them sounds like a clique at times. - We don't want to go too far with the stripping out of the traditional fantasy races. Too much and we'll lose a lot of what would make this world interesting. What I would say is make some of the lesser lights brighter in this world while making the usual big races be still around, but less prominent. I for one would like to make hobgoblins a premier race in this world, with centaurs as a notable, if smaller, grouping.
- As for the dragons I think the most interesting thing to do with them would be to strip out their intelligence. Without that they become the raging beasts of myth, nearly exterminated during the last three hundred years (maybe helped by a dragon-killing version of Buffalo Bill?), before the environmentalists started 'save the dragon' campaigns in the last one hundred years. So, almost extinct and have no effect on the campaign world unless we do adventures set in this world's version of the Green Party...--Alex 11:43, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
- So basically turn dragons into fantasy dinosaurs? That sounds ok to me.
- How about droping the standard PC races, except humans, and keep the others. I've always quite like hobgoblins myself. I also like the idea of a nation of kobolds who have adapted well to the knew age and expanded greatly into electronics and software. Anybody else have an opinion to share? - I like the idea of some of the more stero tiped fantasy creature having once exsisted. But alot of them have been driven to extinction by trufy hunting PC's. So lets kill of the the fay folk as well. --Geoff 15:57, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
OK. Some thoughts on the list for PC races.
- Humans
- Hobgoblins
- Kobolds
- Centaurs
- Satyrs
- Bugbears (Only call them by their Fighting Fantasy name of Garks. It sounds better.)
That would be my list. Any other ones people would like to see in there?--Alex 16:31, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and I have some ideas on where the Elves and Dwarves fit into this world. Give me a few days and I'll try and get something written up.--Alex 16:32, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Not sure about centaurs as practical Pc race. They are going to be a tad unweildy in a city setting - it bad enough tring to get a pram in a lift let alone a hourse man. How about a race of magic constructs as a formaly oppresed slave class but has now been given the vote in some counties as a pc race?--Geoff 22:21, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Well, whatever we do, and this related to Legal Rights For The Undead! too, lets try not to go over the top otherwise the place is going to start to look like circus. Having vampire photographers and werewolf police may work fine in the disc world, but that's a comedy. I don't want the Fourth World to look like an elaborate joke.
I think that we should pick out a few races, no more than 4 or 5, and have them as dominant. They run the largest kingdoms and everyone else fits in around them as minorities groups. In fact, lets keep the minorities limited as well. A varity of races may add some interest, but too many of them and it starts to look a bit daft. Andy 13:23, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
I think a reasonable way of doing things would be if everybody choices one major race for the world and one or two minor races. The minor races either live within the nations of the major races or have a small nation of their own somewhere. In any event, they end to be bit players. If every one joins in, thn we would have 6 major races - more than I originally intended - and from 6 -12 minors. Enough I think.
I quite like Geoffs construct's, they look like a good candidate for a minor race. I also like it because it involves making up our own races rather than just lifting the traditional ones. Andy 10:30, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Right, let's set that up. At the bottom of the page is the uber list for race selection. If everyone can put their choices on there then we can have a final list. If you don't want to use your minor choices then just delete them. And mark any you are making up yourself, so I don't have to spend ages looking for them.
If we keep this list at the bottom of the page it should be easiest. Here goes...--Alex 11:50, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
As I side point, does anyone actually have to put down humans, are are we just going to assume their presence? Andy 14:32, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Well if Kev doesn't put anything down by the time the rest of us have stated our preferences we could always just ask him to put it in there for us.
As for Geoff's undead, I would have thought that the undead would be more of an add-on package to the other races than a race in their own right. Or do you have some cool (no pun intended, despite where you said they lived) idea for them?--Alex 15:58, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- Added. Afraid I haven't really been following any of this, so can be talked out of the minor races if they don't make enough sense. --Kevan 17:17, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
I was already thinking we should have an underwater civilisation (with the best submarine fleet in the world) lying around somewhere. And the doppelgangers would be cool as well.--Alex 17:05, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
Hope every one is ok with what i have written about my to race selections. i know i am probably getting a little a head in the creation process. i just had a few thought and if i don't put them down i forget about were i was going with the idea. any way nothing is cast in iron (or roting flesh) yet for these two races and any feed back is welcome. I quiet like Andy's idea of undead vitality. If no one has any objections i am going to start work on p.c. adaptions for these two races--Geoff 19:01, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
Agents of the outsiders this is a very vage idea at the moment but i was thinking somthing a bit like a demonic shape shifter that spreads the chaos and distruction of are cathulion tipe gods. but i think i may have to let the god debate setal down a bit before a go any ware with these guyies
Before you go too much further with rules stuff for the Antarcticans I'd just like to reiterate a point I made earlier on this page; that undead in 3E are usually treated as an add-on template, rather than as a seperate race. This enables the template to be attached to different races (undead humans, undead hobgoblins, undead flying monkeys) which is what I think we may have to do here. Since undead usually have a natural 1d12 for HD that might make them a fairly powerful type of PC, may I suggest the undead be treated as 'monster levels' like ogres and lizard men do with the exception that they can actually increase their levels in undead. Undead would actually straddle races and classes, being a little mixture of the two (and the d12 HD is only gained when you go up a level of undead and you just get your normal d4 if you go up a level of wizard or d10 for a fighter). Or you could just make it simpler by saying only humans can undergo the process, but I think that's just missing out on a number of good options. Just a few thoughts.--Alex 13:54, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- Alex
- Major Race - Hobgoblins (not a surprise; I've been talking about using these guys since we started...)
- Minor Race - Centaurs (OK, they won't be so useful in other people's cities, but in the wild and in their own cities (with plenty of ramps everywhere) they would be cool.)
- Minor race - Rhino Men (My own creation, based on the occasional guest stars in the Fighting Fantasy books. I always liked that huge brutish look.)
- Andrew
- Major Race - Kobolds
- Minor Race - Humanoid insects. Possibly I'm cheating here, as they will be sub split into different types.
- Minor race -
- Craig
- Major Race - Satyrs (I just think they'll look cool in modern clothing. The horns & cloven hooves with suits has a nice [almost demonic] style. And they'd make great hippies too.)
- Minor race - Intelligent Flying Monkeys!!! (Wizard Of Oz style. My brother will probably notice that I've been reading Fables again...)
- Minor Race -
- Ed
- Major Race -
- Minor Race -
- Minor race -
- Geoff
- Major Race - sentient undead of the free republic of antartica
- Minor Race - Intelgent cog golems with a soul this is one i am making up
- Minor race - Lamir-A dieing race of sammori cats extremly tied up with tradition(definatly no pizza)
- Kevan
- Major Race - Humans
- Minor Race - Mermen
- Minor race - Some not-very-talented shapeshifters
